Balochistan government applauded for swift action

Feb 20, 2014

National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) Chairperson Khawar Mumtaz on Wednesday applauded the Balochistan government on swift action against people blamed for stoning a couple to death in Loralai district of Balochistan.

In a letter written to Balochistan Chief Minister Dr. Abdul Malik Baloch, she said the couple should have been made to face a court of law if an offence was committed and those who took law into their hands having themselves have committed a crime.

“The local cleric and people of the village have placed themselves above the law by becoming judge, jury and executioner. I firmly believe that without implementation of laws across the length and breadth of the country, we cannot claim to be a civilized society,” she wrote in the letter. A man and a woman were stoned to death in a village in Loralai district on Sunday after a cleric issued a ‘fatwa’ against them. Khawar said the horrific development clearly reflects that such crimes against women have not been appropriately responded to and dealt with by the concerned authorities.

In her letter, Khawar requested the Balochistan government to keep NCSW abreast of ensuing developments and assured all kind of help from NCSW platform.
